A true taste of Sweden! These savory, spiced meatballs in a rich, velvety cream sauce are the ultimate comfort food! A bit more advanced though.

Recipe

Authentic Swedish Meatballs (Svenska Köttbullar)

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

·1 lb ground beef
·1/2 lb ground pork
·1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
·1/4 cup whole milk
·1 small onion, very finely grated
·1 egg
·1/2 tsp ground allspice
·1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
·Salt and black pepper to taste
·2 tbsp butter (for frying)

For the Cream Sauce

·4 tbsp butter
·1/4 cup all-purpose flour
·2 cups beef broth
·1 cup heavy cream
·1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
·1 tsp Dijon mustard
·Salt and black pepper to taste
·Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

1.Soak Breadcrumbs: In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs and milk. Let them sit for about 5 minutes until the liquid is absorbed.
2.Mix the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, grated onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined—do not overwork the meat, or the meatballs will be tough.
3.Shape: Roll the mixture into small balls, roughly 1 inch in diameter.
4.Brown the Meatballs: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside. Do not wipe out the pan!
5.Make the Roux: In the same skillet, melt the 4 tablespoons of butter for the sauce. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until it turns a light golden brown.
6.Whisk in Liquids: Slowly pour in the beef broth and heavy cream, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
7.Simmer: Add the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
8.Combine: Add the meatballs back into the skillet and toss to coat them in the creamy sauce. Let them simmer together for another minute to heat through.
9.Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley.

Serving Suggestions

·Mashed Potatoes: Serve over a large scoop of buttery mashed potatoes to soak up the extra sauce.
·Lingonberry Jam: A dollop of tart lingonberry jam is essential for the authentic experience. You can find this at IKEA or specialty grocery stores.
·Pickled Cucumbers: Add a side of thinly sliced pickled cucumbers for a crisp, bright contrast.
